Milestones

“My journey began with the humble process of dehairing cashmere wool in the Himalayas. Growing up, I was immersed in the wool and woolen textile business, which my family had been part of since the 1950s. I remember collecting raw cashmere wool from the rugged Himalayan terrain, transporting it on pony back, and manually dehairing it with skilled workers in Kullu and Amritsar. This labor-intensive process sparked my fascination, leading me to join the family business after completing my education.”
– Prem Mehra

The Mehra family migrated from the Himalayas to Amritsar, Punjab and started their first textile venture named Veejay Yarns & Textiles with humble beginnings with a set up of a prepartory line supporting 4 Spinning frames and a handful of weaving power looms.

Building on his family’s business and a shared passion for textiles, Prem Mehra assisted his father and uncle in establishing their first vertically integrated factory. This venture was in collaboration with Wellman USA, leading to the setup of Wellman Hindustan Private Limited in Mumbai, India, where the process of mechanizing wool processing and spinning began.

To further Prem Mehra’s passion for the textile industry, he ventured independently and established a new joint venture, Global Wool Alliance Private Limited. This venture was formed in collaboration with Bloch & Behrens from Denmark and GTM Corporation from Taiwan.

After this era, Prem Mehra decided to return to his roots and founded RMBAY, named after his wife, Rashmi Mehra. He started from scratch with just two employees, armed with a wealth of experience and technical knowledge.

With a team of five employees, RMBAY restarted its journey, beginning to outsource production to streamline operations.

Wool combing facilities were installed in-house at RMBAY, leading to an increase in employee strength to 20 people.

A state-of-the-art spinning plant was established at RMBAY, transforming it into a comprehensive unit encompassing wool carding, wool combing, re-combing, and spinning. This expansion led to an increase in employee strength to 80.

Another phase was added to the spinning operations at RMBAY, increasing the total number of spindles to 6,064. Consequently, our employee strength grew to 150. The annual spinning capacity was 750 tonnes.

RMBAY faced a profound loss with the passing of its founder, Mr. Prem Mehra. His dedication and vision had transformed RMBAY into a beacon of innovation and quality in the textile industry. Inspired to carry forward his dream and preserve his legacy, his three daughters, Ruchika, Ashima, and Omika, who each collaborated with him at various stages, united under the banner of RMBAY. Known collectively as the RAO Sisters, they are committed to advancing their father’s vision of modesty and excellence in every facet of the company’s operations.

Ruchika, Ashima, and Omika recognized the need for a robust system to ensure that operations at RMBAY could run smoothly and autonomously. Their efforts culminated successfully, establishing a streamlined process that enhances the efficiency and reliability of the company’s daily activities.

RMBAY has upgraded its machinery, effectively doubling its annual spinning capacity to 1,440 metric tonnes. Concurrently, the company has expanded its workforce to 300 personnel, enhancing both production capabilities and operational efficiency.

Prem Mehra(1944-2021)

Founder | RMBAY

My journey began with the humble process of dehairing cashmere wool in the Himalayas.

This labor-intensive process sparked my fascination, leading me to join the family business after completing my education.

In 1963, I helped establish a factory in Thane, Mumbai, mechanizing wool processing and spinning. Wool became both my profession and passion. In 2006, I set up a state-of-the-art combing and spinning unit in Amritsar, a significant milestone in our journey. My wife, Rashmi, has been my constant support and driving force. We named our company RMBAY, reflecting her name and our Bombay roots. In Indian culture, ‘Laxmi’ symbolizes wealth and prosperity, making it an apt name.

Today, RMBAY is proudly owned by Rashmi Mehra and our three daughters. Our legacy lives on through our family’s commitment to quality and innovation. We remain dedicated to the values that have guided us for generations and look forward to a bright future.

Rashmi Mehra

Chairperson | RMBAY

I have had the privilege of being part of RMBAY’s journey from its inception, helping my husband establish his venture. Today, RMBAY is a thriving and respected name in the industry.

My passion for art was nurtured from a young age by my artistic aunts and my own creative pursuits. This passion was evident when I won an art competition with my painting “Lost in the Forest” as a child. As a teenager, I created my first ceramic mural at 16 and later pursued Textile Designing for three years. My artistic journey culminated in my first exhibition, featuring hand-painted sarees, outfits, printed rugs, beachwear, bathmat sets, and steel sculptures, inaugurated by former Prime Minister I. K. Gujral.

Co-founding RMBAY with my husband and daughters has been the perfect culmination of my artistic journey, allowing me to blend my creative vision with business acumen to build a company that values both quality and aesthetics.
